What we fix

  • Kitchen lines closing up with fat and food waste
  • Roots that have found a joint in an old sewer line
  • Showers and floor wastes backing up across the tiles
  • Outside gullies overflowing after rain
  • Lines that clear for a month and then block again
What is going on

Why this happens

A drain does not block all at once. It narrows. Something catches on a joint, the next thing catches on that, and for months the only sign is water sitting a bit longer than it used to. By the time it comes back up over the floor waste, the pipe has usually been half shut for a while.

What is inside matters more than people expect, because it decides how the job is done. Fat and soap build up on the pipe wall and have to be cut off it. Roots come through a joint and have to be sheared out. A dropped joint or a collapsed section is not a blockage at all, and no amount of clearing will fix it.

That is why we put a camera down first. Clearing blind means guessing, and the usual guess is an electric eel, which bores a hole through the middle and leaves the rest sitting on the pipe wall. The water runs again, you pay, and it shuts down again a couple of months later.

One thing is worth trying before you ring anybody. If a single basin or one shower is slow, the problem is usually in that trap and not in the drain. If several fixtures are slow, or the toilet bubbles when the washing machine empties, it is the main line and it needs equipment.

Blocked Drains
How we do it

What actually happens on the job

1

Camera down the line

Before anything goes in the pipe, we look. That shows what is in there, how far along it sits, and whether this is a blockage or damage.

2

Cut it out with water

High pressure jetting strips the pipe wall back to the material it is made of. Roots get sheared at the joint instead of punched through.

3

Camera it a second time

Looking again is the only way to know a drain is genuinely clear. It also shows whether the pipe itself is still sound.

4

Tell you what caused it

You get a straight answer on whether it is finished, or whether the pipe needs relining or a repair to stop it happening again.

Straight about money

What it costs

67 blocked drain jobs completed and counted, out of 1,060 jobs all up.

No call-out fee, the price agreed before anyone starts, and it does not move once you have said yes. We can usually get to you today. On this job, $249 blocked drain clean.

The $249 drain clean covers a standard blockage cleared through one existing access point.

Roots through several joints, a collapsed section, or anything needing excavation costs more, and it gets quoted before we start rather than after.

$0 call-out and free quotes. The camera work is part of the job, not an extra line on the invoice.

Before you ring

Is the toilet gurgling? What the sound is telling you

Drains talk before they block. The noises and the order they appear in tell you roughly where the problem is and how much time you have.

  1. 1
A gurgle when the washing machine empties

Air being pulled back through the trap because the line cannot take the volume. The blockage is downstream of both fixtures, usually out in the yard line. This is an early warning, not an emergency.

  2. 2
The toilet bubbles when you run the shower

Two fixtures sharing a partly blocked line. Same message as above but further along. Once you see this the line is usually well over half restricted.

  3. 3
The shower drains slower every week

The classic root intrusion pattern. Roots grow, the gap narrows, and it gets a little worse each month until one day it does not clear at all.

  4. 4
Water rising in the shower when the toilet flushes

The blockage is now past the point where the two lines meet, and the shower is the lowest opening. This one does need attention quickly.

  5. 5
A smell outside near the gully

The overflow gully in the yard is designed to release before sewage backs up inside the house. If you can smell it there, it has already started doing its job.

  6. 6
    Nothing draining anywhere at once

The main line is blocked. Stop using water in the house entirely and ring. Every flush from here makes the mess worse rather than better.

If you are at the gurgling stage you have time to book properly. If water is rising in the shower when you flush, stop using the fixtures and ring.

Worth knowing before you ring

Blocked Drains, in plain terms

What a blockage actually is

Almost nothing blocks a drain in one go. Fat cools on the pipe wall and sets, soap and hair catch on the fat, and the opening gets smaller over months until one ordinary load of washing is more than the pipe can take. That is why it always seems to happen on a Sunday for no reason.

The exception is roots. A root finds a joint that has opened a millimetre, gets in, and then grows into a mat that catches everything after it. That one does not build slowly on the wall, it grows across the pipe.

Why the same drain blocks twice

An electric eel is a spinning cable. It punches a hole through the middle of what is in there and the water runs again, which feels like a fix. The material is still on the pipe wall, and the hole closes back over.

Water at pressure does something different. It strips the wall back to the pipe and shears roots off at the joint rather than tearing a path through them. It costs more on the day and it is the reason you are not ringing again in six weeks.

What you can check before you ring

Run water in a few places at once. One slow basin is almost always that basin's own trap and you can often clear it yourself. Several slow fixtures, or a toilet that bubbles when the washing machine drains, means the main line and it needs equipment.

Have a look for your inspection opening while you are at it. It is a capped pipe sticking up somewhere near the boundary or the side of the house. Knowing where it is saves us walking the yard.

Here to help

Not sure if it is a blocked drains job?

That is fine. Most people ring us with symptoms, not answers. We will help you work out what needs doing and what can wait.

A quick call helps more than perfect wording

You do not need to know whether to call it blocked drains or something else. Tell us what you can see, what has changed, and whether the problem is getting worse. From there we can send the right gear instead of making you diagnose it.

We slow down when the choice matters

Some blocked drains work has more than one sensible fix. If a smaller repair will get you through, we will say so. If it is likely to fail again soon, we will say that too, then let you choose what suits the house and the budget.

Small details help us arrive prepared

For blocked drains, photos can save time: the label, the leak, the access point, or the place where water is showing. We still confirm it on site, but the extra context helps us bring what the job is likely to need.

Matt came to our home was a delight to work with. Excellent workmanship and very courteous. Went above and beyond to assist. He provided us with quotes for various plumbing items, he quickly provided a detailed quote, explained options. He was excellent at commencing work in one area, and double checked water pressure in our area, hot water system and the plumbing items I had purchased. A great tradesman. Thoroughly recommend. Thankyou Matt.

Had an issue with our 16 year old toilet leaking from underneath the pan somewhere. Called Blake & he sent Lachlan out the following morning to diagnose & quote. Lachlan gave us 3 options, which was great. We chose the middle one, which included replacing all the internals, so hopefully we should be OK for another 16 years! Both Blake & Lachlan were great to deal with & Lachlan did a great job - definitely better than the original installation, which looked a bit dodgy! Happy to recommend.

This is the type of plumbing service that everybody wants. They quote before they do the job. They turn up when they say they will. And they're very good at what they do. Good Service - Fair Price - not something you normally say about Plumbers these days. Keep up the great work Blake, Lachie and Raif.

Absolutely amazing service from the moment I got in touch with them, and in particular Blake. I explained to him my issue and he took the time and effort (completely unprompted) in providing steps of how he would tackle the problem. When it came time to actually have the issue physically looked at, Lachie gave me a call and let me know how far away he was; he arrived promptly and on-time, and was able to very quickly diagnose and provide a solution. I was quoted on the spot and not pressured whatsoever to have more things looked at than I needed to, which I very much appreciated. While I've got my fingers crossed to not have any further short-term issues with my property's plumbing, I'd wholeheartedly recommend these guys and gals to anyone willing to listen. I'm sure there are many other great plumbing businesses around the Gold Coast, but for my money I'd much rather support a local family-owned business providing a very honest and transparent service, who also aren't looking to bleed your wallet dry.

Very happy with the service from Genies Plumbing. We had a leaking kitchen tap and Blake was out in a couple of hours. He sourced a new one, came back later in the day and fitted it. He advised his arrival times very efficiently and was friendly and polite. Would certainly recommend him and call on him again when necessary.

Blake and Lachlan assisted us with a very complex realignment. They were brilliant. They took the time to explain everything, kept me updated with any issues that arose, kept on time and impressively on budget. They could not have worked harder to resolve our issues. I was so worried that we would need to crack our slab and have to retile the majority of our house. These boys made a plan and stuck to it. Fabulous outcome!!

From the moment we made the call with our list of to do's - to the moment the boys came and left after the job completion- the entire help was incredible, and the workmanship was thorough and detailed and reasonable". This workmanship advise is Beyond MOST service and help we have experienced over the last few years. Thank you boys! This type of experience is often not the most favourite one for many people, but in this case, what a great time to get everything sorted with an ease of mind and honesty personified. 2 showers 1 bath 1 laundry 1 bathroom sink Thanks again team - we'll see you again. You'll be our first point of call . A++++

I called Blake to help locate a tricky water leak on our acreage property, he quickly identified multiple leaks on both the council and our side of the line and got them all fixed. He kept us informed every step of the way, and was incredibly responsive and professional, and a genuinely nice person. He's also helping put together a storm water system to help manage the water drainage away from the house during storms. I wouldn’t hesitate recommending Blake for any plumbing job, big or small.

Had some plumbing work done by Blake from Genies Plumbing — removal of an old water meter and repair/replacement of some leaking pipework. Communication was great from start to finish, he was prompt, friendly, well priced, and made sure everything was cleaned up afterwards. Really happy with the work. Would definitely recommend and use again.

Questions we get asked

Why not just use a drain cleaner from the supermarket?

On hair in a basin it sometimes works. On a main line it does very little, because the caustic sits on top of the blockage and goes cold. It also makes the pipe unpleasant for whoever opens it next.

What is the difference between an eel and jetting?

An eel is a spinning cable that makes a hole. Jetting is water at pressure that takes the whole pipe wall back. The hole gets you running today. The strip is what keeps it running.

How do I tell if it is the drain or just one fixture?

Run water in a few places. One slow fixture is normally its own trap. Several slow fixtures, or a toilet that bubbles when something else drains, means the main line.

Can a blocked drain damage the house?

It can. Water that cannot get down the pipe comes up at the lowest point, usually a shower or a floor waste, and sewage under a house is a far bigger job than the drain ever was.
