Not every plumbing problem is an emergency, and treating one as an emergency when it is not costs you money. The test we use is simple: is water going somewhere it should not, right now?
A burst pipe, a hot water system that has let go, a toilet overflowing that will not stop, or water coming up through a floor waste. All of those are doing damage while you decide, and the damage is nearly always dearer than the plumber.
No water at all is also urgent, and so is a gas smell. Those are safety, not inconvenience.
A dripping tap, a running cistern or a slow drain can wait until morning. Annoying, but not getting worse fast. The one to watch is the slow drain, because slow becomes blocked, and blocked at 11pm on a Sunday is a different sort of night.
Before we arrive, turn it off at the main by the meter. That stops the damage clock while you wait.
Where the water is coming from and whether you have got it off. That decides how fast we need to be and what we bring.
Stop the water, then repair. If it is bigger than it looked we stop and talk to you rather than working on.
Emergency or not. Nobody gets a surprise invoice because it happened after hours.

Not everything needs someone out tonight, and paying for that when you do not need it is a waste. Here is roughly how we sort it on the phone.
Emergency. Turn it off at the meter and ring. Every minute of running water is damage you will be repairing later.
Emergency. Do not use any fixture and keep people away from it.
Usually urgent, occasionally not. If the neighbours have none either it is a mains issue and the water authority, not a plumber.
Uncomfortable, rarely an emergency. It almost always waits until morning and costs you less that way.
Not an emergency yet. Stop using that fixture and book it properly.
Not an emergency, but it is costing you money every day. Worth booking this week rather than this month.
If you are not sure, ring and describe it. We will tell you honestly whether it needs someone now, and we would rather say it can wait than charge you for a night call you did not need.
Water you cannot stop, sewage where it should not be, or no water at all. Those three are worth ringing about at any hour, because every one of them gets more expensive the longer it runs.
A dripping tap at ten at night is not one of those, and we will say so rather than charge you for an after hours visit you did not need.
If a pipe has let go, shut the main at the meter. If water is anywhere near a socket or the hot water unit, kill the power at the board. Those two moves stop most of the damage before anybody arrives.
If it is sewage coming back up, stop using every tap, toilet and appliance in the house. Everything you run adds to what is already coming out.
You get the price before anyone picks up a tool, the same as any other job. An after hours rate is a real thing and we tell you what it is on the phone rather than on the invoice.
If it can genuinely wait until morning and cost you less, we will tell you that too.
That is fine. Most people ring us with symptoms, not answers. We will help you work out what needs doing and what can wait.
You do not need to know whether to call it emergency plumbing or something else. Tell us what you can see, what has changed, and whether the problem is getting worse. From there we can send the right gear instead of making you diagnose it.
Some emergency plumbing work has more than one sensible fix. If a smaller repair will get you through, we will say so. If it is likely to fail again soon, we will say that too, then let you choose what suits the house and the budget.
For emergency plumbing, photos can save time: the label, the leak, the access point, or the place where water is showing. We still confirm it on site, but the extra context helps us bring what the job is likely to need.

Had an issue with our 16 year old toilet leaking from underneath the pan somewhere. Called Blake & he sent Lachlan out the following morning to diagnose & quote. Lachlan gave us 3 options, which was great. We chose the middle one, which included replacing all the internals, so hopefully we should be OK for another 16 years! Absolutely amazing service from the moment I got in touch with them, and in particular Blake. I explained to him my issue and he took the time and effort (completely unprompted) in providing steps of how he would tackle the problem. When it came time to actually have the issue physically looked at, Lachie gave me a call and let me know how far away he was; he arrived promptly and on-time, and was able to very quickly diagnose and provide a solution. Very happy with the service from Genies Plumbing. We had a leaking kitchen tap and Blake was out in a couple of hours. He sourced a new one, came back later in the day and fitted it. I called Blake to help locate a tricky water leak on our acreage property, he quickly identified multiple leaks on both the council and our side of the line and got them all fixed.
