Most people ring about filtration because of taste. Town water across South East Queensland is treated and chlorinated on the way to your tap. That is what makes it safe to drink, and it is also why a glass of it on a hot day can taste like a swimming pool.
The second reason is what comes out of the pipe rather than what is in the water. Older galvanised supply lines shed rust from the inside, and any work on the main in your street can push sediment through the whole house for a day or two afterwards. You usually see it in the bath before you taste it.
Acreage and anywhere running off a tank is a different question again. Roof water carries whatever has been sitting on the roof, and a first flush diverter only catches part of it. That is a filtration problem, not a plumbing fault, and it needs a different setup to town water.
Then there is the gear you have already paid for. Ice makers, coffee machines and instant hot taps all run better on filtered water, and some manufacturers ask for a filter as a condition of the warranty. Worth checking the book before the machine fails rather than after.
Taste, sediment, tank water and a feed for one appliance are four different problems and they take different filters. We ask what you have noticed and where, before anybody talks about a product.

A sediment cartridge is a strainer, and it fills up with what it has caught. Carbon goes the other way, because there is only so much work in it before the taste comes through again.
That is why they do not run out together. One chokes the flow, the other passes water that tastes the way it did before the filter went on. Unless the housing is clear, there is nothing on the outside to tell you.
There are three things to watch for. A change in taste, water that is not as clear, and pressure dropping off when a few outlets run at once. Taste points at the carbon side rather than the sediment side. A pressure drop points at the sediment side, though plenty of other things drop pressure too. White crust on the kettle and marks on the shower screen are a different thing again, because a plain sediment or carbon cartridge is not a softener.
A filter that was fine for a while and then started dragging is more likely a cartridge full of what it has caught than the wrong size unit, because a sizing problem shows up from the first day. If you have a filter and the pressure has gone, shut the water off either side of it, take the cartridge out, put the empty housing back on, then turn the water on and run a tap. If the pressure comes back, the filter is where to start, and you can ring us before booking anything.
You pay for the install once. The cartridges are the cost that keeps coming for as long as the filter is on the wall.
A cheap unit that takes cartridges only one supplier sells can cost you more over the years than a more expensive one that takes a common size. Ask what the cartridges cost and where you buy them before you settle on a system, because you will be buying them for years.

Depends where the problem is. If it is only the taste of what you drink, an under sink unit feeding one tap does the job for a lot less money. If sediment is showing up in every bathroom, that is a whole of house question.
