A running toilet is the quietest expensive fault in a house. There is no puddle and no noise you still notice after the first week, and the water goes straight down the pan and out. Most people find it on the bill rather than in the bathroom.
Two things fail inside a cistern. The inlet valve, which lets water in and is meant to shut off at a level, and the outlet valve, which holds that water back until the button is pressed. When the inlet will not shut, the cistern overfills and spills down the overflow. When the outlet will not seal, water trickles into the pan without stopping.
Below the cistern the faults change. A pan that rocks has lost the bed it was set on, and the movement eventually breaks the seal behind it. Water on the floor is either that seal, the connection from the cistern, or condensation on the outside of the pan in humid weather, and all three look identical on tiles.
A weak flush is worth taking seriously, because it is why some toilets block again and again. If there is not enough water moving fast enough, waste only gets partway along the line and sits there waiting for the next flush.
If it shows up in the pan without the button being touched, the outlet seal has gone. It takes a minute and it saves guessing.
Inlet and outlet valves are the usual answer and the common ones are on the van, along with buttons, seals and flexible connections.

A running toilet is the quietest expensive fault in a house. Put a bit of food colouring in the cistern, leave it twenty minutes, and do not flush. If colour appears in the pan, the outlet seal has gone and water has been running down the drain the whole time.
It takes a minute and it is the difference between replacing the right part and guessing at two.
There are three things it can be and they look identical on tiles. The seal behind the pan, the connection from the cistern, or condensation on the outside of the pan in humid weather.
Dry it, put paper down, and check after an hour with nobody using it. Condensation comes back all over the pan. A leak comes back in one spot, and that spot tells us which of the three it is.
If the toilet moves when you sit on it, it has lost the bed it was set on. That movement is what breaks the seal behind it, and resealing without fixing the movement means doing it again.
It gets bedded and fixed down properly first, then sealed. It is more work than a valve change and we quote it as its own job so you are not surprised.

Had an issue with our 16 year old toilet leaking from underneath the pan somewhere. Called Blake & he sent Lachlan out the following morning to diagnose & quote. Lachlan gave us 3 options, which was great. We chose the middle one, which included replacing all the internals, so hopefully we should be OK for another 16 years! Absolutely amazing service from the moment I got in touch with them, and in particular Blake. I called Blake to help locate a tricky water leak on our acreage property, he quickly identified multiple leaks on both the council and our side of the line and got them all fixed. Almost always fix. Everything inside a cistern is replaceable and most pans outlast those parts several times over. A cracked pan is the exception.
