Not every plumbing problem is an emergency, and calling one in at midnight when it could have waited costs you money for no reason. Here is how we tell the difference.
That is the simplest test we know. A burst pipe, a hot water system that has let go, a toilet overflowing that will not stop, or water coming up through a floor waste. All of those are doing damage while you think about it, and the damage costs more than the plumber.
The same goes for no water at all, or a gas smell. Those are not inconveniences, they are safety issues.
A dripping tap, a running cistern, a slow drain, or a hot water system that has gone cold but is not leaking. None of those are getting worse fast. They are annoying and they should be booked, but they will keep until the morning without costing you anything except patience.
A slow drain is the one worth watching. Slow becomes blocked, and blocked at 11pm on a Sunday is an emergency. Book it while it is still just slow.
Before you ring anyone, turn the water off. Every house has a main shut-off, usually at the meter near the front boundary. If you do not know where yours is, go and find it now while nothing is wrong. Two minutes today saves you a flooded house one day.
For a hot water system, there is an isolation valve on the cold inlet at the unit. Turn that and the tank stops feeding the leak.
If it is electrical or you can smell gas, get everyone out first and ring from outside.
Move what you can out of the water. Photograph the damage before you clean it up, because your insurer will want that and nobody remembers to do it afterwards. Put towels down and open windows.
Do not use the fixture that is causing the problem. That means no flushing a blocked toilet and no running taps if a pipe has burst. Every extra litre makes it worse.

Had an issue with our 16 year old toilet leaking from underneath the pan somewhere. Called Blake & he sent Lachlan out the following morning to diagnose & quote. Lachlan gave us 3 options, which was great. We chose the middle one, which included replacing all the internals, so hopefully we should be OK for another 16 years! Both Blake & Lachlan were great to deal with & Lachlan did a great job - definitely better than the original installation, which looked a bit dodgy! Happy to recommend.

Absolutely amazing service from the moment I got in touch with them, and in particular Blake. I explained to him my issue and he took the time and effort (completely unprompted) in providing steps of how he would tackle the problem. When it came time to actually have the issue physically looked at, Lachie gave me a call and let me know how far away he was; he arrived promptly and on-time, and was able to very quickly diagnose and provide a solution. I was quoted on the spot and not pressured whatsoever to have more things looked at than I needed to, which I very much appreciated. While I've got my fingers crossed to not have any further short-term issues with my property's plumbing, I'd wholeheartedly recommend these guys and gals to anyone willing to listen. Very happy with the service from Genies Plumbing. We had a leaking kitchen tap and Blake was out in a couple of hours. He sourced a new one, came back later in the day and fitted it. He advised his arrival times very efficiently and was friendly and polite. Would certainly recommend him and call on him again when necessary.

I called Blake to help locate a tricky water leak on our acreage property, he quickly identified multiple leaks on both the council and our side of the line and got them all fixed. He kept us informed every step of the way, and was incredibly responsive and professional, and a genuinely nice person. He's also helping put together a storm water system to help manage the water drainage away from the house during storms. I wouldn’t hesitate recommending Blake for any plumbing job, big or small.
