What we fix

  • Sand and hair packing out the trap on a beachside shower
  • Roots through the older lines in Southport, Labrador and Ashmore
  • Gullies overflowing on the flat blocks near the canals
  • Kitchen lines closing up with fat and food waste
  • Newer estates where the ground has settled and pulled a joint apart
What is going on

Why this happens

A blocked drain almost never fixes itself. It starts as a shower that empties slowly or a gurgle in the kitchen sink, and it ends with water coming back up through the lowest drain in the house.

On the Gold Coast the usual culprit is tree roots. Older suburbs like Southport, Labrador and Ashmore are still running earthenware sewer lines, and every joint in them is a crack waiting for a root to find it. Once one gets in, it grows into a mat that catches everything else going past.

Newer estates have a different problem. Ground laid as fill is still settling, and settling pulls pipe joints apart or takes the fall out of a run. Water that should be moving sits still instead, and anything solid in it stops where the water stops.

Then there is the everyday stuff. Fat down the kitchen sink, wet wipes that say flushable and are not, sand and hair in a bathroom, and coffee grounds. All of it builds up in the same place, which is wherever the pipe already has a rough spot.

Blocked Drains Gold Coast
How we do it

What actually happens on the job

1

We look before we guess

A camera goes down the line first. That tells us whether it is roots, a collapse, a belly in the pipe or just build-up, and where it is. Guessing costs you money.

2

Clear it with the right gear

High pressure jetting cuts roots and strips the walls of the pipe properly. An electric eel punches a hole through and leaves the rest behind, which is why the blockage comes back.

3

Camera it again

Second look confirms the line is actually clear, not just flowing again. If there is damage behind the blockage you see it on the screen at the same time we do.

4

Tell you what we found

You get a straight answer on whether this is done, or whether the pipe itself needs repair or relining. If it needs more, we quote it before we do it.

Straight about money

What it costs

67 blocked drain jobs completed and counted, out of 1,060 jobs all up.

No call-out fee, the price agreed before anyone starts, and it does not move once you have said yes. We can usually get to you today. On this job, $249 blocked drain clean.

The $249 drain clean covers a standard blockage through one access point. That is most of what we get called to.

It costs more when the job is not standard. No accessible inspection opening, a collapsed section, roots through several joints, or a line that needs excavation. Those get quoted before we start, not after.

You will never get a bill with a number on it you have not already agreed to. If we open the line and find something bigger, we stop and talk to you.

Before you ring

Is the toilet gurgling? What the sound is telling you

Drains talk before they block. The noises and the order they appear in tell you roughly where the problem is and how much time you have.

  1. 1
A gurgle when the washing machine empties

Air being pulled back through the trap because the line cannot take the volume. The blockage is downstream of both fixtures, usually out in the yard line. This is an early warning, not an emergency.

  2. 2
The toilet bubbles when you run the shower

Two fixtures sharing a partly blocked line. Same message as above but further along. Once you see this the line is usually well over half restricted.

  3. 3
The shower drains slower every week

The classic root intrusion pattern. Roots grow, the gap narrows, and it gets a little worse each month until one day it does not clear at all.

  4. 4
Water rising in the shower when the toilet flushes

The blockage is now past the point where the two lines meet, and the shower is the lowest opening. This one does need attention quickly.

  5. 5
A smell outside near the gully

The overflow gully in the yard is designed to release before sewage backs up inside the house. If you can smell it there, it has already started doing its job.

  6. 6
    Nothing draining anywhere at once

The main line is blocked. Stop using water in the house entirely and ring. Every flush from here makes the mess worse rather than better.

If you are at the gurgling stage you have time to book properly. If water is rising in the shower when you flush, stop using the fixtures and ring.

Worth knowing before you ring

Blocked Drains Gold Coast, in plain terms

What is actually blocking it

Nine times out of ten on the Gold Coast it is roots. Most housing here went up between the 1970s and the 1990s, the sewer under it is clay or earthenware, and forty years of garden has had plenty of time to find the joints. A root does not smash the pipe. It finds a hairline where two lengths meet, follows the moisture in, and then keeps growing until there is a mat of it sitting in the line.

The rest is what people put down it. Wet wipes, whatever the packet claims, do not break down. Cooking fat goes down warm and sets hard. On a canal block, sand and silt work their way in through a cracked joint and settle in the low spots.

It matters which one it is, because they need different gear and they have very different outcomes. Roots come back on a schedule. A fat build-up does not, once the line is properly stripped.

Why an eel is not the same as a jetter

An electric eel is a cable with a cutting head that spins down the pipe. It punches a hole through the middle of a blockage and the water starts moving again, so it looks like the job is done. What is left is the rest of the blockage sitting on the pipe wall, and it closes back over within a few weeks or a few months.

A jetter is high pressure water. It cuts the roots out and strips the pipe wall back to the pipe. That is why we quote jetting rather than eeling: the drain stays clear, and the camera afterwards shows you why.

What we tell you afterwards

Every job gets a camera down the line before and after. Before, so we are not guessing at what is in there. After, so you can see the state of the pipe once it is clean.

Then you get a straight answer. Either the pipe is sound and it was just roots, in which case you know when to expect it again. Or the pipe itself has gone and you need to know that, because clearing a collapsed line every six months costs more over three years than fixing it once.

Here to help

Not sure if it is a blocked drains gold coast job?

That is fine. Most people ring us with symptoms, not answers. We will help you work out what needs doing and what can wait.

A quick call helps more than perfect wording

You do not need to know whether to call it blocked drains gold coast or something else. Tell us what you can see, what has changed, and whether the problem is getting worse. From there we can send the right gear instead of making you diagnose it.

We slow down when the choice matters

Some blocked drains gold coast work has more than one sensible fix. If a smaller repair will get you through, we will say so. If it is likely to fail again soon, we will say that too, then let you choose what suits the house and the budget.

Small details help us arrive prepared

For blocked drains gold coast, photos can save time: the label, the leak, the access point, or the place where water is showing. We still confirm it on site, but the extra context helps us bring what the job is likely to need.

Matt came to our home was a delight to work with. Excellent workmanship and very courteous. Went above and beyond to assist. He provided us with quotes for various plumbing items, he quickly provided a detailed quote, explained options. He was excellent at commencing work in one area, and double checked water pressure in our area, hot water system and the plumbing items I had purchased. A great tradesman. Thoroughly recommend. Thankyou Matt.

Had an issue with our 16 year old toilet leaking from underneath the pan somewhere. Called Blake & he sent Lachlan out the following morning to diagnose & quote. Lachlan gave us 3 options, which was great. We chose the middle one, which included replacing all the internals, so hopefully we should be OK for another 16 years! Both Blake & Lachlan were great to deal with & Lachlan did a great job - definitely better than the original installation, which looked a bit dodgy! Happy to recommend.

This is the type of plumbing service that everybody wants. They quote before they do the job. They turn up when they say they will. And they're very good at what they do. Good Service - Fair Price - not something you normally say about Plumbers these days. Keep up the great work Blake, Lachie and Raif.

Absolutely amazing service from the moment I got in touch with them, and in particular Blake. I explained to him my issue and he took the time and effort (completely unprompted) in providing steps of how he would tackle the problem. When it came time to actually have the issue physically looked at, Lachie gave me a call and let me know how far away he was; he arrived promptly and on-time, and was able to very quickly diagnose and provide a solution. I was quoted on the spot and not pressured whatsoever to have more things looked at than I needed to, which I very much appreciated. While I've got my fingers crossed to not have any further short-term issues with my property's plumbing, I'd wholeheartedly recommend these guys and gals to anyone willing to listen. I'm sure there are many other great plumbing businesses around the Gold Coast, but for my money I'd much rather support a local family-owned business providing a very honest and transparent service, who also aren't looking to bleed your wallet dry.

Very happy with the service from Genies Plumbing. We had a leaking kitchen tap and Blake was out in a couple of hours. He sourced a new one, came back later in the day and fitted it. He advised his arrival times very efficiently and was friendly and polite. Would certainly recommend him and call on him again when necessary.

Blake and Lachlan assisted us with a very complex realignment. They were brilliant. They took the time to explain everything, kept me updated with any issues that arose, kept on time and impressively on budget. They could not have worked harder to resolve our issues. I was so worried that we would need to crack our slab and have to retile the majority of our house. These boys made a plan and stuck to it. Fabulous outcome!!

From the moment we made the call with our list of to do's - to the moment the boys came and left after the job completion- the entire help was incredible, and the workmanship was thorough and detailed and reasonable". This workmanship advise is Beyond MOST service and help we have experienced over the last few years. Thank you boys! This type of experience is often not the most favourite one for many people, but in this case, what a great time to get everything sorted with an ease of mind and honesty personified. 2 showers 1 bath 1 laundry 1 bathroom sink Thanks again team - we'll see you again. You'll be our first point of call . A++++

I called Blake to help locate a tricky water leak on our acreage property, he quickly identified multiple leaks on both the council and our side of the line and got them all fixed. He kept us informed every step of the way, and was incredibly responsive and professional, and a genuinely nice person. He's also helping put together a storm water system to help manage the water drainage away from the house during storms. I wouldn’t hesitate recommending Blake for any plumbing job, big or small.

Had some plumbing work done by Blake from Genies Plumbing — removal of an old water meter and repair/replacement of some leaking pipework. Communication was great from start to finish, he was prompt, friendly, well priced, and made sure everything was cleaned up afterwards. Really happy with the work. Would definitely recommend and use again.

Questions we get asked

How long does it take?

Most standard blockages are cleared within the hour. If the camera shows damage behind it, we will tell you what else is needed and what it costs before we go any further.

How much does it cost to unblock a drain?

A standard blocked drain cleared through one existing access point is $249, with no call-out fee on top of it. The number moves when the job is not standard: no accessible inspection opening, roots through several joints, a collapsed section, or a line that has to be dug up. Those are quoted before we start, never after.

Will it come back?

Not if we found the cause. Jetting clears the whole pipe rather than punching a hole through the middle of the blockage, and the camera tells us whether the pipe itself is the problem.

Do you need to dig?

Usually no. Jetting and relining both work without digging, and even a collapsed section can often be cut back from the inside and lined. We only dig when the camera shows a section that cannot be relined, and we tell you before we bring a shovel anywhere near your yard.

What are those blockage warning signs?

A slow shower, a gurgling toilet when you run the washing machine, or a smell from the yard gully. Any of those and the line is already partly blocked.

Is $249 really the price?

For a standard blockage through one access point, yes. Anything outside that is quoted first. Mention promo code DRAIN249 when you ring.
