In the post-war brick through Wishart, Mansfield, Mount Gravatt and Carindale, whole streets went up in the same few years. The original units were replaced once around the same time, and that second generation is now reaching the end of its run together.
In the older Queenslanders through Coorparoo, Camp Hill and Holland Park, the unit is often tucked under the house on pipework that is decades older than the system bolted to it. Replacing the tank is straightforward. The connections behind it sometimes are not.

Hot water systems fail in a handful of predictable ways. Two minutes of checking tells you whether this is a part, a tank, or nothing to do with the unit at all.
Usually the element or the thermostat, and both are repairs rather than replacements. Check the switchboard first: hot water is often on its own circuit and a tripped breaker looks exactly like a dead unit.
Sediment building in the bottom of the tank, taking up space that used to hold water. On an older tank this is usually the beginning of the end.

What matters for you is not the badge on the front, it is the age and where it sits. A unit tucked against a south wall out of the weather outlives the same unit standing in the open.
It is not bad luck. A tank that is already weak has to work hardest when the incoming water is coldest, and that is the morning the element or the tank finally gives up.
Which is why the signs are worth acting on in autumn rather than in July. Rusty water first thing, hot water running out sooner than it used to, or a damp patch that never dries are all telling you the same thing.
