A blocked toilet is the one plumbing problem nobody can put off until next week. It is also the one people most often make worse, usually with a plunger and enthusiasm.
Most blockages sit within a metre or two of the pan and clear easily. The ones that matter are the ones that do not, because a toilet that keeps blocking is telling you the problem is further down the line, not in the toilet at all.
The usual causes are wet wipes, too much paper at once, and things that went in from a small child's hand. In older Gold Coast and Brisbane homes it is more often roots in the sewer line, and the toilet is simply the lowest point where it shows up first.
The tell is whether other fixtures are affected. If the toilet blocks on its own, it is the toilet. If the shower gurgles or the yard gully overflows at the same time, the blockage is in the main line and the toilet is just the messenger.
First job is deciding whether this is the pan, the branch line or the main sewer. That changes everything about how it gets fixed.

They go down and that is where it ends. They do not break up like paper, so they collect at the first rough spot in the pipe and catch everything else. They are the single most common cause we see.
