The housing is a mix, from 1970s lowset brick through to much newer builds on subdivided blocks, so two houses on the same street can need completely different work. We would rather look than assume from the front.
There has been a lot of rebuilding and subdividing here, and rebuilding a house rarely means rebuilding what runs out to the street. A newer home is often connected through pipework laid for the house before it.
That catches people out, because it is reasonable to assume a new house means new everything. The age of the building tells you very little about the age of the drainage.
The southside sits on reactive clay that swells through a wet season and shrinks back through a dry one, taking the pipework with it. Rigid pipe does not bend, so the movement goes into the joints, and once a joint has opened the roots find it within a season or two.
A drain that has slowly worsened over a year rather than blocking overnight is usually telling you exactly this.
A hot water system rarely dies quietly. It weeps at the base for weeks, rusts the fitting behind it, and then lets go on the coldest morning of the year. The tell-tales are rusty water first thing, a tank that takes longer to recover, or a damp patch that never quite dries. We would rather look at it while you still have hot water than after you do not, and we will tell you honestly whether it has years left or weeks.
Ground that was engineered before the house went on it keeps settling for years afterwards. Stormwater joints are the first thing to complain: they pull apart a few millimetres, water gets into the soil instead of the pipe, and the settling gets worse. On a newer place this is the most common thing we find, and it is cheap to fix early.
Roots do not break a pipe so much as find the gaps in it. A hairline at a joint lets moisture out, the tree follows the moisture, and within a season there is a mat of root inside the line. You notice it as a shower that takes longer to clear each month. We put a camera down first so you can see what is actually in there, cut it out with high pressure water rather than punching a hole through it, then camera it again to show you the pipe wall. If the pipe itself has gone, relining fixes it without digging up the yard.

Had an issue with our 16 year old toilet leaking from underneath the pan somewhere. Called Blake & he sent Lachlan out the following morning to diagnose & quote. Lachlan gave us 3 options, which was great. We chose the middle one, which included replacing all the internals, so hopefully we should be OK for another 16 years! I called Blake to help locate a tricky water leak on our acreage property, he quickly identified multiple leaks on both the council and our side of the line and got them all fixed.
